Several factors increase the risk of insufficiency despite apparent dietary intake. Heavy or regular alcohol consumption interferes with folate absorption and increases urinary excretion. Certain medications — including methotrexate and some anticonvulsants — are known to interfere with folate metabolism. Still, translating these findings into clear clinical recommendations for the general population requires further research.
